Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officers are looking for a pet monkey that has been on the loose for about two months.

The pet Patas monkey, which is native to West Africa and areas of East Africa, escaped from a home in northwest Marion County in the area of County Road 335. FWC officials believe the monkey has been roaming between there and near County Road 236 in the Micanopy area.

The area is heavily wooded, said Karen Parker, FWC spokeswoman.

"It's basically if we see him we're going to try to trap him," Parker said. "But if we go in to try try and trap him, it would be like searching for a needle in a haystack."

Anyone in the public who spots the monkey is asked to call the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission wildlife alert line at 1-888-404-3922 or call FWC at (386) 758-0525.
